although all the laws for Solar Energy in Florida are on the homeowner’s side, the power companies have tried their darndest to change net metering laws. Don’t be fooled by power companies investing in solar farms as their support of solar energy. In 2024 the Florida legislature passed a bill eliminating Net Metering as we know it, a devasting blow to the solar industry. As luck would have it, Governor DeSantis vetoed the bill, saving the solar industry and homeowners from the brute of the power companies. The key to solar in Florida is one-for-one net metering which in part allows homeowners to store solar energy onto the grid. Floridians get 100% credit from the power companies for solar production limited to what a homeowner consumes.
Solar Energy is Under Relentless Attack by Power Companies. The biggest reason why it’s not a good idea to delay going solar is because the power companies will never stop trying to change the laws until they succeed. Duke Energy has already succeeded in eliminating net metering in North Carolina through the state legislature. The power companies know they can’t win on the ballot, so their lobbyists are working the state legislatures nonstop. Homeowners who benefit from net metering do not have to worry should the laws change, because they have grandfather rights.
In 2018 home solar was selling for $3.20 to $4.50 a kilowatt-hour, in 2024 the average solar system sells for $2.60 to $3.40 a kilowatt-hour. That’s quite a dramatic price drop considering what the rate of inflation has been since 2020. There will never be a better time to go solar because all the stars have aligned in the homeowner’s favor.
When McDonald’s decides to open a new location, their position is every day it’s not open they’re losing money. The cost of building something that creates an income stream doesn’t change, but the loss of income grows every day until it’s ready. Delaying home solar energy is not a good idea once you decide to do it.
